San Francisco’s label, Function 8, announces the release of its new 12″ single, “Weed on the Tree, Forty on the Floor” by renowned beat architect Tommy Guerrero and label head Gadget. The song, set to hit the streets on May 18th, is a churning downtempo number with tinkling piano and lovely bass lines throughout, offering a glimpse at what the duo’s upcoming full-length, “Hoy Yen Ass’n”, will contain. Bay Area reggae chanter Litall Toney guests on one mix with his relaxed verses, and the flipside remix, “Hash on the Bush, 32 on the Ground” features a heavy drum break and scratches by Gadget. Also on the b-side, or “8-side” in Function 8 parlance, is the moody, soundtracky “2 Days Later” with Senor Guerrero’s distinctive guitar work. XLR8R Magazine calls it “… the sound of Northern California’s hobo-tech street gangs; lazy beats for vatos locos and wino graffiti artists… We like.” The track sounds not unlike something off the MoWax label where, Tommy is planning to release an album later this year.
